Sleep Stage Percentage Calculator

Quick answer

Adults typically spend 10% to 20% of the night in deep sleep and 20% to 25% in REM, according to the Sleep Foundation. Enter your tracker minutes to see each stage as a percentage of your sleep and where deep and REM fall.

How To Use The Sleep Stage Percentage Calculator

  1. Open last night in your tracker. Find the minutes it shows for awake, light (or core), deep and REM sleep.
  2. Enter the minutes. Awake is optional. Pick your age group, because the published ranges are for adults.
  3. Read the percentages. The tool shows each stage as a share of your sleep and checks deep sleep and REM against adult ranges.

What Is A Sleep Stage Percentage?

A night of sleep is made of light sleep, deep sleep and REM sleep, plus short wake-ups. A stage percentage is the share of your total sleep time spent in one stage. Most trackers report minutes, so the percentage is the quickest way to compare a night with typical values. For the stages themselves, see the stages of sleep.

According to the Sleep Foundation, adults typically spend 10% to 20% of the night in deep sleep and 20% to 25% in REM. To estimate deep sleep and REM from your bedtime and wake time instead, use the REM sleep calculator.

How Does The Sleep Stage Percentage Calculator Work?

It adds your light, deep and REM minutes to get total sleep, divides each stage by that total and compares deep sleep and REM with the adult ranges.

Formula: Total sleep = Light + Deep + REM; Stage % = Stage minutes / Total sleep x 100; Awake % = Awake / (Total sleep + Awake) x 100
StageTypical adult share of sleepChecked here?
Light or core sleepThe remainder; no firm rangeNo, shown only
Deep sleep10% to 20%Yes
REM sleep20% to 25%Yes

Some textbooks give higher figures for healthy young adults, so you may see other numbers elsewhere. This tool uses the Sleep Foundation ranges, the same ones as our deep sleep and REM pages.

Worked Example: A 6 Hour 50 Minute Night

StageMinutesShare of sleepRange
Light25061%No firm range
Deep6015%10% to 20%: within
REM10024%20% to 25%: within
Total sleep410100%

With 30 minutes awake, the time in bed is 440 minutes, so awake is 7% of it. Raise REM to 110 minutes and the share becomes 26%, just above the range.

Factors That Change Your Tracker Numbers

Trackers Estimate Stages

Wearables infer stages from movement and heart rate. The Sleep Foundation notes that trackers are not perfect but can highlight trends.

Labels Differ

Some devices call light sleep core sleep. Enter that figure under light or core.

One Night Is Noisy

Look at a week of nights before drawing a conclusion.

Age

Deep sleep decreases over time and into older age, so lower numbers are common after 65.

Who Should Use A Sleep Stage Calculator?

  • Tracker users with a watch, ring or app that reports stages.
  • People comparing nights after a change of habit.
  • Older adults who want context for a lower deep sleep share.
  • Curious sleepers wondering how a full night breaks down.

Common Mistakes With Sleep Stage Numbers

Using Time In Bed As The Total

Percentages here are of sleep, not time in bed. Leave out awake time.

Chasing A Perfect Split

The ranges are typical, not targets. How rested you feel matters more.

Comparing Across Devices

Different trackers measure stages differently, so stick to one device.

Reading One Night As A Verdict

Look at several nights.

Accuracy And Limitations

The percentages are exact for the minutes you enter. The ranges are general adult figures and your tracker is an estimate, so treat the result as context, not a measurement.

What It Calculates Accurately

  • Each stage as a share of total sleep
  • Awake as a share of time in bed
  • Whether deep sleep and REM are below, within or above the range

What It Does Not Account For

  • Tracker error, which differs between devices
  • A range for light sleep or for children
  • Medicines, health conditions or sleep disorders

Sleep Stage FAQs

What are normal sleep stage percentages?

Adults typically spend 10% to 20% of the night in deep sleep and 20% to 25% in REM, according to the Sleep Foundation. The rest is mostly light sleep.

How do I calculate my sleep stage percentages?

Add your light, deep and REM minutes to get total sleep, then divide each stage by that total and multiply by 100.

Is 15% deep sleep good?

It is within the typical adult range of 10% to 20%.

Is 30% REM sleep too high?

It is above the typical range of 20% to 25%. One night on a tracker is a rough guide, so look at several nights.

How much light sleep is normal?

This tool uses no firm range for light sleep. It is what remains after deep sleep and REM.

Does awake time count in the percentages?

No. The stage percentages are of total sleep. Awake time is shown as a share of time in bed.

What is core sleep?

Some trackers label light sleep as core sleep. Enter that figure under light or core.

Are sleep trackers accurate for stages?

They are not perfect but can highlight trends, according to the Sleep Foundation. Use several nights, not one.

Does deep sleep fall with age?

Yes. Children and adolescents need the most, and deep sleep decreases over time and into older age.
